Q: What is the MBTI?
A: The Myers Briggs Type Indicator is a
well-researched and valid assessment tool that helps in understanding how we
can be so similar to others yet so different in our styles of communicating,
working and playing. Its creators, Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs, used
Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung's theory of psychological types to develop the instrument.
The publisher of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator is the Consulting
Psychologists Press, Inc., whose literature states:
"The MBTI is the most widely-used personality
inventory in the world and gives practical assistance in organizational
development and training, career counseling, education ... and personal growth and
development."
Q: How is the MBTI used?
A: The MBTI has helped tens of thousands of people
worldwide to:
- Identify their strengths
and celebrate who they are
- Pinpoint areas of potential
improvement to strengthen their search for excellence
- Identify their preferences
of how to interact with others, make decisions and gather information for
those decisions
- Understand and better deal
with others' differing styles.
Q: What does this mean for me?
A: The information the MBTI provides about your personal styles of decision making, gathering information for those decisions and interacting with the world around you is a great stepping stone to improving your skills at leadership, teamwork, time management, stress management, career hunting or enrichment, conflict resolution, communication and much more.
Q: Who can use the MBTI?
A: It is designed to be taken by adults and students
(fourteen and up). Only individuals who pass a qualifying process governed by
the publisher of the MBTI can legally administer the instrument and counsel
individuals on their results. To effectively and ethically administer the MBTI,
one should also take an extensive course of training.
Kathleen Howard, President of Human Development Associates, has successfully completed this course,
earned a perfect score on the international qualifying exam and continues her training
with many hours of training annually. Kathleen is certified as a MBTI Master
Practitioner and has used the Myers Briggs Type Indicator with
